China and Pakistan have strengthened cooperation in emergency response through a joint water rescue training programme that equipped 65 Punjab rescue officers with specialised skills to handle water-related emergencies.
The six-day programme, held from October 10 to 15, featured the “Ark of Life” initiative led by China’s Blue Sky Rescue team in collaboration with Pakistani emergency responders. It aimed to improve local preparedness for monsoon rains, floods and other water-related incidents.
Training Focuses on Practical Rescue Skills
The programme covered essential techniques for responding to emergencies in rivers, canals, low-lying areas and urban flood zones.
Participants received practical training in establishing safety lines, preparing improvised rafts for casualty evacuation, handling boats and conducting water rescue operations.
Experts from Blue Sky Rescue provided hands-on instruction in swift-water rescue, rope techniques, safety procedures and coordinated team responses. These skills are important for helping rescue teams operate safely and effectively in challenging conditions.
Practical Exercise Tests Rescue Capabilities
The programme concluded with a practical water rescue exercise conducted by the Emergency Services Academy.
Punjab Minister for Health and Emergency Services Khawaja Salman Rafique said the exercise followed standards set by the United Nations’ International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).
Addressing the closing ceremony, Rafique thanked the Chinese experts for sharing specialised water rescue techniques. He said the knowledge and skills gained through the training could help save lives during emergencies.
Strengthening Flood Preparedness
Water-related emergencies require trained personnel, suitable equipment and rapid coordination among response teams. The training aimed to strengthen these capabilities among Punjab’s rescue officers ahead of potential monsoon and flood emergencies.
The initiative also provided an opportunity for Chinese specialists and Pakistani responders to exchange practical knowledge and experience.
Through joint training programmes, both sides can support the development of local emergency response skills and improve coordination when dealing with complex water-related incidents.
