Eco-Friendly Fleet Hits the Roads
A fleet of 45 Chinese electric buses has reached Rawalpindi to start operations on 10 routes from October 21. The move marks a major step toward eco-friendly public transport across Punjab.
These buses are part of a 1,100-vehicle electric fleet being introduced across the province. Each bus includes air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, automated ticketing, and disability-friendly access, ensuring comfort and inclusivity for passengers.
Linked with Metro Bus Service
The new service connects directly to the Rawalpindi–Islamabad Metro Bus System, offering a reliable and affordable commuting option for daily travellers.
According to Punjab Transport Department PRO Sheraz, over 200 electric buses are already operating in nine districts, including Mianwali, Wazirabad, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Faisalabad, Pakpattan, Lahore, and Muzaffarabad. The rest will be deployed soon.
He said the fare is proposed at Rs 20, keeping it affordable for low-income passengers.
Operations in Rawalpindi and Gujar Khan
A total of 80 electric buses will serve the Rawalpindi region. So far, 45 buses have reached the city, while 15 are stationed in Gujar Khan. The Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMA) will manage Rawalpindi’s operations, while the Punjab Transport Company (PTC) will handle services in Gujar Khan and other areas.
Infrastructure and Management
Uzair Shah, PMA General Manager (Operations), said all charging stations and depots are ready. “The buses will begin operating next month,” he confirmed.
He added that PMA has the legal mandate to operate feeder buses for metro systems in Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Multan, whereas PTC will oversee other districts.
Commuter Facilities and Urban Mobility
The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) will build passenger shelters to protect commuters from rain and sunlight once the routes become active.
This project demonstrates Punjab’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility, cleaner air, and modern public transport infrastructure, backed by Chinese collaboration.
