At the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council on Monday, a China-led draft resolution promoting economic, social, and cultural rights was adopted without a vote. The resolution, backed by nearly 70 countries including Pakistan, Bolivia, Egypt, and South Africa, aims to address inequalities and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
China’s Ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Chen Xu, emphasised the importance of bridging differences, building consensus, and prioritising action-oriented strategies. He highlighted the 80th anniversary of the UN and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, noting that the resolution seeks to enhance thematic discussions, interactive dialogues, and technical assistance via the economic, social, and cultural rights knowledge hub.
Developing countries praised the resolution, stating it reflects the real needs of people and responds to calls for increased investment in these rights. The European Union and several other nations commended the resolution, while the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also recognised China’s leadership in advancing economic, social, and cultural rights worldwide.
