Xi Jinping has called for stronger ties between China and North Korea, urging both countries to deepen their “combat friendship forged in blood” and strengthen strategic coordination.
Xi made the remarks during a meeting with North Korean Premier Pak Thae-song in Beijing ahead of the 65th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance.
Treaty Anniversary Highlights Historic Partnership
Xi said the 1961 treaty remains the political and legal foundation of bilateral relations. He described the agreement as a symbol of the long-standing friendship between the two countries.
Moreover, he said the anniversary offers an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and carry forward the legacy established by earlier generations of leaders.
Call for Deeper Strategic Coordination
Xi emphasized the need for closer strategic coordination amid an evolving international environment.
In addition, he urged both countries to safeguard their sovereignty, security, and development interests while creating favorable conditions for their respective modernization efforts.
He also called for faster implementation of the consensus reached during his recent meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Expanding Practical Cooperation
The Chinese president encouraged broader cooperation in politics, the economy, and culture.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of preserving shared revolutionary history, including the role of the Chinese People’s Volunteers during the Korean War, and passing that legacy to younger generations.
Relations Continue to Improve
China and North Korea have strengthened diplomatic engagement since late 2025. Xi’s recent visit to Pyongyang, his first in seven years, signaled renewed momentum in bilateral relations.
During that visit, both sides agreed to expand high-level exchanges and deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
North Korea Reaffirms Partnership
Premier Pak described Xi’s recent visit to Pyongyang as a new milestone in bilateral relations.
He said the friendship treaty provides a strong legal foundation for long-term cooperation and supports continued collaboration between the two neighboring countries.
