The Water and Power Development Authority has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch livelihood development schemes worth Rs972.6 million for communities in the Diamer Basha Dam project area.

The initiative forms part of the dam’s broader socio-economic development program, which aims to improve living standards alongside one of Pakistan’s largest water storage and hydropower projects.

MoU to Support Community Development

The agreement was signed between the Diamer Basha Dam Project and the Diamer district administration.

Dr. Engr. Nazakat Hussain, General Manager and Project Director of the Diamer Basha Dam Project, signed the MoU with Deputy Commissioner Diamer Lt. Muhammad Owais Abbasi (Retd.). Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Secretary Arshad Majeed attended the signing ceremony.

Livelihood Projects to Benefit Local Communities

Under the agreement, relevant government departments will implement the livelihood schemes under the supervision of the district administration.

Moreover, authorities will consult local communities during implementation to ensure the projects address local development needs.

Joint Committee to Monitor Progress

Officials will establish a joint oversight committee to supervise the implementation of the schemes.

The committee will include representatives from the district administration, WAPDA, and local communities. As a result, authorities aim to ensure transparency, quality, and timely completion of the projects.

Part of a Larger Welfare Program

The new package is part of WAPDA’s wider community development initiative linked to the Diamer Basha Dam Project.

According to officials, WAPDA has allocated Rs78.5 billion for welfare and development projects in the project area.

In addition, several major infrastructure projects have already been completed, including the Thore Hydel Power Station, Thak Hydel Power Station, and Cadet College Chilas.

Strategic Importance of Diamer Basha Dam

The Diamer Basha Dam is being constructed on the Indus River. The project is expected to increase Pakistan’s water storage capacity and expand hydroelectric power generation.

Furthermore, it will strengthen long-term water and energy security while supporting sustainable development in surrounding communities.
