World’s largest offshore converter station in China

The “Heart of Offshore Wind,” the largest offshore converter station in the world, has arrived at the Qingzhou offshore wind farm’s installation site in Yangjiang, South China. Operations for the offshore float-over installation are set to start on Thursday.

Capacity of the converter

The “Heart of Offshore Wind” is the first 2,000 megawatt, ±500 kV flexible DC offshore converter station in the world. It weighs roughly 25,000 tonnes and is about the height of a 15-story structure,

The project will use an innovative float-over installation technology, an internationally recognised approach for situating huge offshore structures. This is because of its enormous weight, which surpasses the lifting capacity of current domestic marine crane vessels.

Impact of the converter

After it is finished, the converter station will gather, increase, and transform the alternating power produced by 163 wind turbines in the Three Gorges Yangjiang Qingzhou offshore wind farm’s Phase V and Phase VII portions into direct current. Subsea cables will then carry the electricity to the onshore power grid.

The plant is anticipated to produce about 6 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity a year, significantly increasing China’s supply of renewable energy.

Revolutionizing China’s power sector

The “Heart of Offshore Wind” marks a major leap in China’s transition toward a cleaner, more efficient power system. By enabling ultra-high voltage direct current transmission from large-scale offshore wind farms, it significantly reduces energy loss and improves grid stability over long distances. Its scale and advanced engineering demonstrate China’s growing capacity in next-generation renewable infrastructure. Once operational, it will strengthen integration of offshore wind into the national grid, accelerate the replacement of fossil fuels, and enhance energy security. Ultimately, this project represents a transformative step toward a low-carbon, technologically advanced, and highly resilient power sector in China.
