Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences has signed a memorandum of understanding with First Institute of Oceanography to strengthen cooperation in marine science, engineering technology, and academic training.
The agreement was signed on July 6 in Qingdao, according to a statement issued by the Chinese institute.
Focus on Research and Training
The agreement provides a framework for joint research projects and training programmes. It also aims to strengthen scientific collaboration between Pakistan and China in marine and ocean sciences.
Moreover, both institutions plan to promote knowledge sharing and develop research capacity through future academic exchanges.
LUAWMS Highlights Importance of Partnership
LUAWMS Vice-Chancellor Abdul Malik Tareen led the Pakistani delegation during the signing ceremony.
He described the agreement as an important milestone in the university’s partnership with China. Furthermore, he expressed hope that the collaboration would produce practical research and training outcomes.
Supporting Pakistan’s Coastal Development
LUAWMS is located in Uthal, Lasbela district, along Pakistan’s Arabian Sea coastline. The university specializes in agriculture, water resources, and marine sciences.
In addition, Balochistan’s 760-kilometre coastline plays a vital role in fisheries, coastal development, and port activities. This growing sector continues to increase demand for marine research and skilled professionals.
Importance of Marine Resources
Pakistan also holds sovereign rights over natural resources in parts of its continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles. These rights apply to seabed and subsoil resources under international maritime law.
As a result, scientific research and ocean resource management have become increasingly important for the country’s long-term development.
Expanding Pakistan-China Academic Cooperation
The First Institute of Oceanography operates under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources. Its research covers marine geology, ocean and climate modelling, ecological protection, and disaster prevention.
Meanwhile, LUAWMS has expanded cooperation with several Chinese institutions. The university renewed its agreement with Ocean University of China in 2025 and has also held discussions with Shandong University’s Weihai campus and the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory.
