UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised Pakistan’s active participation and initiatives at the UN Security Council during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar in New York on Monday.
In the meeting, Ishaq Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to multilateralism and emphasized the central role of the United Nations in tackling global challenges. He assured the Secretary-General of Pakistan’s dedication to enhancing the UN’s role in conflict resolution, sustainable development, and the protection of fundamental human rights.
The UN Secretary-General acknowledged Pakistan’s strong and principled stance at the Security Council, appreciating its constructive contributions.
Dar reiterated Pakistan’s adherence to the UN Charter’s principles, especially promoting peace through dialogue and diplomacy. He highlighted Pakistan’s recent leadership in organizing high-level debates on multilateralism and peaceful dispute resolution, as well as UN-OIC cooperation, during its presidency of the Security Council this month.
He also raised issues of national and regional significance, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, violations of the Indus Waters Treaty, and foreign-sponsored terrorism in Pakistan. Dar emphasized the need for a just solution to the Kashmir issue in line with Security Council resolutions.
Commending the Secretary-General’s efforts to ease recent Pakistan-India tensions, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s full support for Palestinian statehood, a Gaza ceasefire, and opposition to Israel’s West Bank annexation plans.
The two leaders discussed the upcoming High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestine Question and the Two-State Solution, stressing the need for concrete outcomes.
Dar also supported the Secretary-General’s “UN80” initiative, calling it a vital opportunity to reinforce the UN’s core pillars, peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights.
Additionally, he briefed the Secretary-General on Pakistan’s initiatives to enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth.
