The main carriageway of the Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR) has reached 99% completion. Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Salman Ghani shared the update during an inspection on Tuesday.
He directed the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) to speed up the remaining work. This includes drainage systems, retaining walls, and interchange ramps.
38.3-Kilometre Road to Improve Connectivity
The 38.3-kilometre access-controlled road will connect Baanth on National Highway N-5 with Thalian on the M-2 Motorway.
The project aims to divert heavy and intercity traffic away from congested areas of Rawalpindi. It will also improve passenger and freight movement across the region.
Moreover, the road could strengthen connections between major transport and trade routes.
CPEC Link Under Consideration
Authorities are studying a more direct connection between the Ring Road and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) network.
Under a proposed second phase, the link could extend from Thalian towards Hakla. The Hakla-D.I. Khan Motorway forms part of the CPEC route.
National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) has already examined possible alignments. However, the proposed extension still requires final government approval.
Single Network Tolling System Planned
Commissioner Ghani also reviewed plans for a Single Network Tolling System on the Ring Road.
The proposed system could simplify toll collection for motorists using the road. Meanwhile, authorities continue work on the remaining sections of the project.
Boost to Regional Trade and Transport
Once completed, the Rawalpindi Ring Road could improve traffic flow around the Rawalpindi-Islamabad region. A future CPEC connection could further enhance its importance for freight and regional trade.
As a result, the project could become an important transport link connecting local traffic with Pakistan’s wider CPEC network.
