President Asif Ali Zardari held talks with Iraq’s Caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani in Baghdad, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation across key sectors of mutual interest.
During the meeting, the president appreciated the hospitality extended to him and congratulated the Iraqi leadership and people on the completion of parliamentary elections, expressing hope for political continuity and sustained development.
Both leaders agreed that Pakistan and Iraq share long-standing brotherly ties and emphasized the need for regular high-level engagement to translate goodwill into practical outcomes. Economic cooperation featured prominently, with President Zardari noting that trade volumes remain below potential and require targeted efforts.
The president highlighted Pakistan’s interest in expanding collaboration in information technology, agriculture, construction, pharmaceuticals and food security. He also stressed the importance of establishing direct banking channels to facilitate trade, investment and smoother movement of pilgrims.
Issues faced by Pakistani pilgrims visiting Iraq were also discussed. The president urged early finalisation of the Zaireen Management MoU, improved immigration facilitation and flexibility in emergency travel cases. Both sides agreed to continue engagement through institutional mechanisms.
