Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced on Friday that the government is finalising a comprehensive strategy for the construction of water reservoirs and improved water management across Pakistan, including the four provinces, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
He emphasised that the reservoirs will be developed in consultation with provincial governments, ensuring coordination at every level. Stressing the urgency of the matter, the premier said climate change is a pressing reality, and only proactive planning can minimise the damage caused by natural disasters.
Highlighting the importance of collective action, Shehbaz Sharif noted that the federation, provinces, and regions must work together to protect people from climate-induced challenges. He described climate change adaptation and water management as a national priority that requires unity and shared responsibility.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, work is already in progress under his directives to draft a policy for a timely response to monsoon-related disasters and other climate impacts. The working paper for this policy will soon be shared with all provincial governments to chalk out a coordinated plan of action.
The statement further added that once the current emergency stabilises, the prime minister will chair a high-level meeting with the chief ministers of all provinces, as well as the heads of relevant institutions. The prime minister of Azad Jammu & Kashmir and the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan will also participate in the session to finalise long-term measures.
