Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif lauded the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission’s (PAEC) contributions to the health sector, calling cancer treatment a “noble service to humanity.” Addressing the inauguration of the Kashmir Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Oncology and Radiotherapy (KINOR) in Muzaffarabad, AJK, he emphasized the importance of providing modern treatment facilities close to patients’ homes, sparing them long travels from remote areas.
Highlighting PAEC’s efforts, the Prime Minister noted his personal experience as a cancer survivor and urged authorities to further enhance care for patients who face financial and logistical challenges. PAEC Chairman Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar stated that 20 cancer treatment centers currently handle 80% of patients nationwide, and KINOR will serve as the 21st center, offering advanced facilities under expert supervision.
Nearly 60% of cancer patients arrive at advanced stages, creating a need for early screening and awareness. International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi commended Pakistan’s government and PAEC for expanding access to modern cancer treatment. The Prime Minister also visited hospital departments to review the facilities and emphasized continuing efforts to provide hope and relief to patients.
