Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set up a 13-member high-level committee to devise permanent solutions for Gwadar’s recurring power outages and water shortages. The body will hold its first meeting on Friday and submit an immediate report for the premier’s review and decision.
According to the official notification, the committee is tasked with presenting a short-term plan, deliverable within four to five days, for an uninterrupted water supply to Gwadar city. This will include operationalising the 7.5 MGD water supply scheme and the 1.2 MGD seawater desalination plant. Additionally, it must outline a mid-term strategy to be implemented within four to five months, ensuring reliable water and electricity for the entire Gwadar district.
Both proposals must assign responsibilities to relevant ministers and implementing agencies, along with strict timelines.
The committee includes Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, the federal ministers and secretaries for maritime affairs and energy (power division), Balochistan chief secretary, chairmen of the Gwadar Port Authority and Gwadar Development Authority, Quetta Electric Supply Company CEO, Umar Cheema, and former Sky Electric CEO Amin Sukhera.
