Pakistan’s rice exports to China hit $36M in first half of 2025

In the first half of 2025, Pakistan’s rice exports to China have soared by 84%, reaching a total value of $35.93 million. This indicates the success of China’s economic policies, which aim to foster trade relations and diversify import sources to stabilize its food security.

According to the latest data from the China General Administration of Customs (GACC), shipments of semi-wholly milled rice (Commodity code 10063020) reached over $29.53 million, with a total volume of around 66.96 million kilograms between January and June. This marks a sharp rise compared to the same period in 2024, when the export value stood at approximately $5.23 million, positioning Pakistan-China trade stronger than ever.

Ghulam Qadir, Trade and Investment Counsellor at the Pakistan Embassy in Beijing, shared that Pakistan’s total rice exports to China, including both premium and broken varieties, amounted to roughly $35.93 million during the first six months of 2025. This represents an increase of over $16.4 million, or 84%, compared to $19.53 million recorded in the corresponding period last year.

Among the exported varieties, broken rice, particularly the IRRI-6 type (Commodity code 10064020), earned $4.52 million from approximately 13.38 million kilograms. Additionally, a specific category of broken rice characterized by shorter grain length (less than 6mm) and a length-to-width ratio below 2 (Commodity code 10064080), contributed $1.87 million to the export value.

Ghulam Qadir noted that the sharp rise in Pakistan’s rice exports is closely linked to China’s efforts to diversify its import sources and strengthen food security. He explained that this growing trade reflects Pakistan’s emerging position as a reliable rice supplier in the Chinese market.

The steady increase in exports signals not just a strong trade relationship but also opens the door for deeper economic collaboration between the two countries. As trade policies improve and diplomatic ties deepen, Pakistani exporters are hopeful about expanding their reach, which could bring long-term benefits to the country’s agricultural sector.
