Pakistan is set to develop a cutting-edge aquaculture park at Korangi Fish Harbour in Karachi, with an estimated investment of Rs3 billion. Spanning 120 acres, the park is expected to significantly enhance marine production, with annual output projected to rise from 360 tons to 1,200 tons, depending on the species farmed and methods used. Revenue forecasts range between $720,000 and $7.2 million, highlighting the project’s commercial potential.
Announced by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, during a high-level meeting on blue economy development, the initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision for sustainable marine growth. The project will be executed through a public-private partnership and is designed to promote responsible aquaculture practices while contributing to food security, exports, and job creation in coastal areas.
Key stakeholders, including the Gwadar Port Authority, Korangi Fish Harbour Authority, Marine Fisheries Department, and Balochistan Chamber of Commerce, attended the meeting, where experts highlighted Pakistan’s ideal coastal conditions for aquaculture. The Minister has instructed the KoFHA to submit an execution report within 10 days to fast-track development and has also proposed replicating this model in Balochistan to utilise its vast coastline.
In related efforts, the Marine Fisheries Department’s sub-office is being relocated to the Gwadar Port Authority to improve coordination on marine initiatives. Meanwhile, land identification and lease policy reviews are underway for the Port Qasim Authority, with updates to its master plan being aligned with the National Ports Master Plan.
Minister Junaid reaffirmed the government’s commitment to driving sustainable blue growth through targeted investments in aquaculture and port infrastructure, laying the groundwork for a stronger, more resilient marine economy.
