UNSC Condemns Attack on Doha Without Naming Israel
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday condemned strikes on Qatar’s capital, Doha, during an emergency session. While the statement, agreed by all 15 members, including Israel’s ally the United States, called for de-escalation and solidarity with Qatar, it stopped short of explicitly naming Israel as the aggressor.
Pakistan Demands Accountability for Israel’s Aggression
At the meeting, Pakistan’s UN envoy, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, strongly condemned what he termed Israel’s “illegal and unprovoked aggression” against Qatar. He stressed that targeting a sovereign state hosting delicate mediation talks on Gaza peace was a reckless violation of international law and the UN Charter.
Ahmad urged the Council to go beyond statements of concern and hold Israel accountable for undermining international peace and security. He warned that such actions erode respect for law, embolden impunity, and threaten regional stability.
Solidarity With Qatar Amid Regional Tensions
Pakistan expressed complete solidarity with Qatar, supporting its right to take measures for sovereignty and security under the UN Charter. Ambassador Ahmad noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Doha, accompanied by a high-level delegation, symbolised regional unity in response to Israeli aggression.
The UNSC session also heard Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani accuse Israel of trying to derail mediation efforts for a Gaza ceasefire. Despite the attack, Qatar vowed to continue its role as a mediator.
Israel’s Actions Widely Criticised at UN
Several UNSC members described Israel’s strike as a dangerous escalation, with UN officials warning it could open “a new and perilous chapter” in the Middle East conflict. Critics said Israel’s pattern of cross-border strikes, spanning Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and Yemen, demonstrates systemic disregard for international norms.
Pakistan’s envoy underscored that the Doha strike was not an isolated incident but part of Israel’s broader destabilising policies. He called on the international community to recommit to the centrality of international law and collective security.
