Emergency Session Called in New York
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meets today over the Israeli attack on Qatar, convening an emergency session in New York. The meeting was requested jointly by Pakistan, Algeria, and Somalia, who warned that Israel’s recent airstrike threatens global peace and security.
Israeli Strikes in Doha Spark Global Condemnation
On Tuesday, Israel carried out deadly strikes on a residential complex in Doha’s Leqtaifiya district. The assault targeted Hamas officials during discussions on a U.S.-backed Gaza ceasefire proposal. Five people were killed, including Humam, the son of senior Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, and Corporal Bader Al-Humaidi Al-Dosari of Qatar’s Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya).
Qatar condemned the attack as “state terrorism”. Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani described Israel’s actions as “rogue behaviour” undermining regional stability.
Pakistan Leads Diplomatic Push at the UN
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar called the assault “unprovoked airstrikes” and a “dangerous escalation.” He confirmed that Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, will address the Security Council on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Pakistan also urged for an emergency debate at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Islamabad welcomed Qatar’s decision to host an Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit on September 15, where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to represent Pakistan.
Calls for Accountability Continue
Pakistan reiterated its solidarity with Qatar, pressing the international community to condemn Israel’s actions and ensure accountability under international law. Israel, however, accepted responsibility, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling it a “wholly independent Israeli operation.”
Meanwhile, the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 64,600 Palestinians since October 2023, intensifying demands for global action. The UNSC meeting today is expected to see strong calls for restraint, accountability, and renewed efforts toward peace.
