At the United Nations, Pakistan reaffirmed its principled stance that consistent and universal adherence to international law is vital for a just and peaceful world order.
Addressing the UN Legal Committee
Speaking at the UN General Assembly’s Legal (Sixth) Committee debate on “The Rule of Law at the National and International Level,” Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, warned that selective application and impunity have weakened global norms. This, he noted, has undermined peace efforts, especially in Palestine and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
Warning Against Growing Disregard
The ambassador expressed regret over the growing disregard for international law. He cited military provocations, unilateral actions, and violations of treaties once considered sacrosanct.
“We are witnessing a disturbing rise in power politics, territorial aggrandisement, and unilateralism,” he said. Such trends, he cautioned, threaten to erode the international legal order.
Call for Accountability and True Adherence
Ambassador Asim Ahmad stressed that ending decades-long occupations and ensuring accountability must begin with genuine adherence to international law. Without accountability, he warned, peace and security will remain out of reach.
Pakistan’s Response to Aggression
Referring to past acts of aggression against Pakistan, he reminded the forum that Pakistan’s response was made under Article 51 of the UN Charter, the right to self-defence. This, he explained, was to safeguard sovereignty and uphold the rule of law.
Highlighting the Plight of Palestine
Turning to Palestine, the ambassador condemned Israel’s continued use of force against civilians in Gaza. He reiterated that peace and development are inseparable from respect for international law.
He also reminded the assembly that UN Security Council resolutions form part of international law and carry binding obligations for all member states. Therefore, he urged consistent implementation to preserve the integrity of these resolutions.
Need to Democratize International Law
As the UN marks its 80th anniversary, Ambassador Ahmad emphasised the need to democratise international law. According to him, global norms must remain inclusive, equitable, and free from discrimination rather than exclusive or restrictive.
Pakistan’s Commitment to a Rules-Based Order
In conclusion, the ambassador reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to a rules-based international order. Strengthening the rule of law, he stated, will help the world move from conflict and chaos toward cooperation, peace, and stability.
