Russia has reiterated its strong interest in enhancing its partnership with Pakistan under the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), with a special emphasis on cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts.
This reaffirmation came during a meeting in Moscow between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to Pakistan’s Prime Minister.
During the discussion, Fatemi conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and reaffirmed Pakistan’s leadership’s commitment to expand collaboration with Russia in areas such as energy, trade, and regional connectivity.
Fatemi also provided an in-depth overview of recent developments in South Asia, expressing Pakistan’s concerns over rising regional tensions.
He particularly warned about the serious consequences of India’s potential move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, which could destabilize the region.
In response, the Russian Foreign Minister expressed support for the normalization of relations between India and Pakistan, noting that improved ties would contribute positively to regional peace and stability.
Commenting on the bilateral relationship, Lavrov noted the consistent progress in Pak-Russia cooperation and highlighted significant projects, including new steel mill ventures and connectivity-related initiatives.
Fatemi also delivered a letter from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
