Pakistan has received 258 advanced agricultural machines and irrigation systems from China under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) agricultural cooperation.
The equipment aims to modernise farming, increase productivity, and support climate-resilient agriculture across the country.
According to official documents, the Agricultural Engineering Institute of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) received and assembled the machinery at the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) in Islamabad.
The equipment will now support technology demonstrations and wider adoption across Pakistan.
258 Machines Distributed Across Provinces
The package contains nine categories of agricultural machinery and equipment.
These include:
- 40 tractors
- 20 rotary tillers
- 30 rotary tillage fertilizer drills
- 40 rice-wheat combine harvesters
- 8 corn harvesters
- 40 inter-tillage weeders
- 40 trimmers
- 20 hose-reel irrigation systems
- 20 photovoltaic water-pumping systems
The government has allocated the machinery to provinces and PARC.
Punjab will receive 75 units, while Sindh will receive 45. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will receive 38, and Balochistan will receive 36.
PARC will retain 64 units for research, demonstrations, and technology development.
CPEC Supports Agricultural Modernisation
The machinery forms part of the Prime Minister’s Agriculture Modernization Initiative.
The programme aims to transform Pakistan’s agriculture into a technology-driven and climate-resilient sector.
It also focuses on improving food security, increasing productivity, promoting value addition, and strengthening agricultural exports.
Moreover, the initiative supports modern seeds, biotechnology, precision agriculture, and climate-smart farming technologies.
Pakistan and China Expand Agricultural Cooperation
A major part of the programme involves cooperation between PARC and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS).
The federal government approved the restructuring of PARC in principle in March 2026. The proposed model draws on the structure and experience of CAAS.
Under the plan, Pakistan will establish five Centres of Excellence at NARC in Islamabad.
These centres will focus on crop research, livestock development, climate-smart agriculture, artificial intelligence, and food processing.
New Centre to Promote Digital Agriculture
The restructuring plan also proposes a Centre of Excellence for Advanced Agricultural Mechanization and Digital Agriculture.
The centre will work with CAAS to develop and test modern farming technologies.
Furthermore, it will focus on precision agriculture, artificial intelligence, robotics, IoT, drones, and climate-smart machinery.
The centre is expected to become a national hub for research, testing, demonstration, and commercialisation of advanced agricultural technologies.
Government Plans Wider Mechanisation
The Ministry of National Food Security and Research is also working on a broader agricultural mechanisation strategy.
The proposed measures include a National Agricultural Mechanization Policy and a national system for machinery testing and certification.
In addition, the government plans to promote local manufacturing of advanced farm equipment.
It also aims to expand Custom Hiring Centres through public-private partnerships. These centres can give farmers access to modern machinery without requiring them to purchase expensive equipment.
1,000 Graduates Receive Training in China
Another major component of the agricultural cooperation programme involves training Pakistani graduates in China.
The government plans to train 1,000 agricultural graduates in specialised fields. So far, 885 graduates have completed their training, while the remaining 115 are expected to depart soon.
The training covers nine priority areas.
These include aquaculture, crop breeding, genomics, farm mechanisation, fruit and vegetable processing, efficient irrigation, drones, artificial intelligence, IoT, livestock breeding, disease surveillance, and seed technologies.
Trained Graduates to Support Farmers
The trained graduates are expected to become master trainers across Pakistan.
They will transfer modern farming knowledge to farmers, researchers, agricultural extension workers, and educational institutions.
As a result, the programme could accelerate the adoption of precision farming, mechanisation, water-efficient technologies, hybrid seeds, and value-added processing.
The latest machinery delivery therefore adds another practical dimension to Pakistan-China agricultural cooperation. It also supports Pakistan’s broader efforts to make farming more productive, technology-driven, and resilient to climate challenges.
