National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), arranged a 2-day Pak-China symposium for Early Warning of Hydrological and Geological disasters. The symposium focused on key disaster risk reduction areas including: glacier lake outburst floods, cryosphere monitoring, flood forecasting, landslide hazards, seismic risks, geosptial analytics and community preparedness.
Attendees of the event
The symposium was held in the headquarter of NDMA in Islamabad from 18-19 May. Government officials, scientists, climate resilience experts and disaster management experts attended the event to discuss possible solutions.
Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of Planning Development and Special Initiatives highlighted the need for community preparedness, institutional coordination and scientific innovation. The minister reiterated Pakistan’s that flash floods, heatwaves and extreme weather events to protect vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure. He emphasized the role of NDMA for strengthening provincial capacities and improving operationla coordination to improve disaster resilience.
Launch of “Global Best practices for Disaster Mitigation and Management”
The NDMA launched “Global Best practices for Disaster Mitigation and Management”, a report which compiled international, standards, lessons and scalable models to strengthen Pakistan’s climate resilience.
Inam Haider Malik, Chairman NDMA stated that the authority is shifting its focus from reactive disaster response toward a more proactive and preparedness-oriented disaster management approach.
He noted that Pakistan and China share vulnerability to multiple hazards across the Hindu Kush, Karakoram, and Himalayan regions, including tectonic fault lines, glacier-fed river systems, and infrastructure risks linked to the Karakoram corridor, making operational collaboration between the two countries increasingly essential.
In addition, the minister emphasized that enhancing multi-hazard early warning systems, strengthening risk communication, and advancing community-based preparedness continue to remain key national priorities.
China-Pakistan cooperation
Chinese and Pakistani experts presented their research on glacier dynamics, lanslide hazards and seismic risks. Lastly, Chinese representatives reaffirmed their support for providing support to Pakistan in disaster management, scientific research and technological innovation.
