Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, and NDMA Chairman jointly briefed the media on Tuesday regarding the monsoon rains and resulting floods.
Attaullah Tarar said urban flooding had caused heavy losses to lives and property, adding that relief operations were accelerated under the Prime Minister’s directives. He confirmed that 25,000 people had been relocated to safer areas, with real-time updates being shared with the public.
NDMA Chairman highlighted that flooding was caused by glacier melt in the north and cloudbursts in several regions, leaving 670 dead and around 1,000 injured. He said missing persons were largely found dead, and more rainfall is expected as the seventh monsoon spell continues until August 23. Relief consignments, including food and medicines, have been dispatched to five districts under the Prime Minister’s ration package.
DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry added that the Pakistan Army had intensified rescue and relief operations, with 6,903 people rescued so far. Army Aviation helicopters, CMH doctors, and nine medical camps are providing treatment in flood-hit areas, while eight army units are active in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Two battalions are working in Buner district, alongside extensive medical support.
Authorities assured that preparations for the new rain spell are complete, and awareness messages are being issued to minimise risks.
