China has called on the international community to step up support for South Sudan’s fragile peace process, stressing that the world’s youngest nation cannot achieve stability overnight without tolerance, patience, and African-led solutions.
Speaking at a UN Security Council (UNSC) debate, Sun Lei, China’s deputy permanent representative, said that South Sudan continues to grapple with political, security, economic, and humanitarian challenges. He urged all parties to honour the 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement, accelerate the political transition through dialogue, and prepare for lasting stability.
Call for Stability and End to Hostilities
The Chinese envoy underlined that peace and security remain top priorities. He called on factions to cease hostilities, exercise restraint, and protect civilians from harm. The spillover of conflict from Sudan, cross-border movement of armed groups, and proliferation of small arms, he warned, are worsening instability in the region.
Sanctions, Security, and Regional Mediation
Sun pressed the Security Council to heed African nations’ calls to adjust or lift “unreasonable sanctions” on South Sudan, arguing that such measures hinder progress. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening border controls, deploying unified security forces, and reducing intercommunal violence.
Focus on Development and Humanitarian Relief
Pointing to severe economic and humanitarian challenges, Sun said improving living conditions is essential for peacebuilding. He called for increased international assistance to boost economic diversification and sustainable development, adding that “African issues should be resolved in the African way.”
China’s Continued Role
Reaffirming China’s commitment, Sun noted that Beijing has already provided energy restoration and food aid, pledging to continue supporting South Sudan on its path toward peace, stability, and prosperity.
