Gwadar Port has handled around 200,000 tonnes of transit breakbulk cargo over the past three months, reinforcing its position as a reliable maritime trade corridor amid shifting global supply chains.
Speaking at the Pakistan Logistics & Shipping Summit 2026, Yu Bo said Gwadar Port is becoming an increasingly important gateway for regional and international trade.
Strategic Location Boosts Port’s Importance
Yu Bo said global trade routes are changing because of geopolitical developments and shipping security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz.
As a result, Gwadar Port’s strategic location on the Arabian Sea has become increasingly valuable for international cargo movement.
Moreover, he noted that the port offers a stable and efficient alternative route for regional trade.
Trade Incentives Improve Port Operations
During the first half of 2026, the China Overseas Ports Holding Company introduced several trade incentives and facilitation measures.
These initiatives received support from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Gwadar Port Authority.
Consequently, port operations recorded steady progress and improved cargo handling performance.
New Transit Routes Expand Connectivity
Yu Bo highlighted the importance of the Transit of Goods Through Pakistan Order 2026, issued by the Ministry of Commerce on April 25.
The policy introduced six overland transit routes connecting Pakistan with Iran.
Furthermore, the 87-kilometre Gwadar-Gabd corridor provides a direct land connection between Pakistan and Iran, creating smoother transit for goods moving to Central Asian countries.
Gateway to Central Asia
Officials believe ongoing improvements in customs procedures, road infrastructure, and multimodal transport will further strengthen Gwadar’s regional role.
In addition, the port is expected to become an important overseas gateway for landlocked Central Asian states seeking access to international markets.
As global supply chains continue to evolve, Gwadar Port is positioning itself as a key hub for trade, connectivity, and regional economic cooperation.
