Pakistani and Chinese experts have urged authorities to integrate disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, and science-based planning into all China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) infrastructure projects.

Specifically, this joint recommendation emerged during an international training workshop focused on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Green Development for CPEC. The event was organized by the China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre on Earth Sciences, alongside COMSATS and several partner organizations.

 Integrating Science-Based Policy

During the workshop, Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, highlighted Pakistan’s extreme vulnerability to climate-induced disasters. She demanded stronger early warning systems, resilient infrastructure, climate-smart planning, and science-based policymaking. According to her, these measures are essential to mitigate disaster risks and protect vulnerable communities.

Similarly, COMSATS Executive Director Ambassador Dr. Mohammad Nafees Zakaria emphasized that development planning must incorporate climate science, ecosystem protection, and risk-informed decision-making. Furthermore, he noted that scientific cooperation plays a vital role in building resilience while simultaneously supporting economic growth.

Protecting Investments in CPEC

In addition, Professor Hong Tianhua, Executive Director of the China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre on Earth Sciences, stated that disaster risk reduction and sustainable development should be treated as deeply linked priorities. He stressed that this approach is particularly crucial for large-scale infrastructure and connectivity projects.

The workshop participants discussed practical ways to secure CPEC-related investments against environmental hazards. They also explored strategies to promote circular economy practices and strengthen regional energy cooperation.

Ultimately, the workshop succeeded in its primary goal. It strengthened scientific cooperation regarding disaster preparedness, green development, and climate-resilient planning.
