A spokesman for China’s foreign ministry stated on Thursday that the country fully supports Cuba’s right to sovereignty and national integrity. It also strongly condemned outside meddling in internal affairs and recognizes each country’s right to independent leadership.
Condemnation of Raul Castro’s indictment
In answer to a question regarding the recent indictment of Cuban revolutionary leader Raul Castro by the United States, spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the comments during a daily news briefing. According to Guo, China opposes unlawful unilateral measures that are not approved by the UN Security Council. He further reaffirmed that these measures have no foundation in international law and should be strictly dealt with.
The US Department of Justice indicted Castro, the 94-year-old former president of Cuba, and five other co-defendants for their alleged involvement in the 1996 shoot-down of two US aircraft, which resulted in four fatalities. This raised concerns from the global community on the legitimacy of international law and the effectiveness of the UNSC.
Commitment to global peace
China remains committed to global peace and supports a multilateral governance structure, whereby no one country has absolute control over the other smaller countries. This statement further reaffirms China’s commitment to global peace.
