Chinese Premier Li Qiang reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to working with the United Nations to implement the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), pledging support for a more just, fair, and inclusive global system.
Speaking at a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th UNGA debate, Li said the GGI, recently proposed by President Xi Jinping at the SCO Summit in Tianjin, offers China’s solutions for strengthening international cooperation in the face of shifting global dynamics.
Li underscored China’s consistent backing of the UN’s central role in peace, security, development, and human rights, while warning against rising unilateralism and protectionism undermining the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. He called on the Global South to raise a collective voice against hegemony and to push for greater equity in global governance.
The premier stressed China’s alignment of national growth with global progress, promising to share opportunities, expand openness, and act as a stabiliser for the world economy. He urged the UN to strengthen its role in climate change, AI governance, and sustainable development cooperation.
UN chief Guterres welcomed China’s initiatives, describing the GGI as consistent with UN values and a timely response to global calls for reform. He recognised China as a vital pillar of multilateralism and emphasised the need to expand Global South representation in international mechanisms to protect shared interests.
