Pakistan Navy is set to receive its first Hangor Class submarine today in Sanya. The ceremony marks a major milestone in Pakistan-China naval cooperation.
President Asif Ali Zardari will attend the handover ceremony. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf has also arrived in Sanya for the event.
Advanced Features of Hangor Class Submarine
The new submarine features Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology. This system allows extended underwater operations without surfacing.
It also includes stealth sensors, heavy-weight torpedoes, and land-attack cruise missiles. In addition, it is equipped with advanced electronic warfare and communication systems.
Key systems include:
- Optronic scopes
- Electronic Support Measures (ESM)
- Advanced radar systems
- Hull-mounted, flank, and towed array sonars
- Mine avoidance systems
Moreover, the submarine supports encrypted communication links for secure underwater coordination with command centers.
Strong Multi-Role Combat Capability
The Hangor Class submarine functions as a multi-role combat platform. It can launch heavy-weight torpedoes and anti-torpedo decoys.
It also carries submarine-launched anti-ship cruise missiles with land-attack capability. As a result, it significantly expands operational flexibility in modern naval warfare.
Strengthening Pakistan’s Naval Power
The induction of this submarine will enhance Pakistan’s underwater warfare capability. It will also strengthen stealth operations and maritime deterrence in the Arabian Sea.
Furthermore, it improves Pakistan’s ability to respond to evolving regional security challenges.
Overview of the Hangor Class Project
The Hangor Class Submarine Project is one of the most significant naval defense programs for the Pakistan Navy. It includes eight submarines built in partnership with China.
Four submarines are being constructed in China. The remaining four are being built at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works with full technology transfer.
Historical Development of Pakistan’s Submarine Force
Pakistan’s submarine force has evolved over decades. It began with U.S.-supplied Tench-class submarines.
Later, the fleet expanded with French Daphne and Agosta-class submarines. This long operational experience enabled Pakistan to move toward indigenous construction partnerships.
Strategic Importance of Hangor Class
The Hangor Class design is based on China’s Type 039B Yuan-class submarine. It features advanced stealth and acoustic management systems.
In addition, Air-Independent Propulsion enhances submerged endurance and operational reach.
The project strengthens Pakistan’s sea-denial capability. It also reinforces strategic deterrence in the maritime domain.
Pakistan-China Maritime Cooperation
The project highlights deepening defense cooperation between Pakistan and China. It also reflects growing collaboration in naval technology and industrial development.
As a result, the partnership continues to support Pakistan’s goal of self-reliance in submarine construction.
