During a meeting in Beijing on Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that China consistently prioritizes its relations with Nepal within its regional diplomacy. Wang, who also serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China, reaffirmed Beijing’s friendly policy toward the entire Nepali population.
Wang assured his counterpart, Nepali Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, that China will continue to support Nepal’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He added that Beijing respects Nepal’s right to choose its own domestic development path.
Expanding Connectivity and the Belt and Road Initiative
A key focus of the talks was transforming Nepal from a land-locked nation into a land-linked one. Wang stated that China is eager to advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation with Nepal. This effort will specifically target joint projects in aviation, border ports, highways, and power grids.
To achieve these goals, Wang urged both nations to maximize existing cooperation platforms, deepen practical ties, and boost cultural exchanges.
Investment and the Business Environment
While China actively encourages its enterprises to invest and operate in Nepal, Wang noted that Beijing hopes to see a more transparent and equitable business environment for these companies.
Foreign Minister Khanal welcomed this interest, stating that Nepal is eager to attract Chinese capital. He committed to providing Chinese businesses with a fair, friendly, and law-based operating environment.
Nepal’s Commitment to Regional Stability
Khanal expressed deep gratitude for China’s long-standing support toward Nepal’s national development and public welfare. He highlighted that China has always treated Nepal as an equal partner while respecting its independence.
Reaffirming Kathmandu’s geopolitical alignment, Khanal stated that Nepal remains firmly committed to the one-China policy and supports China’s reunification goals. He explicitly vowed that Nepal will not allow its territory to be used by any forces against Chinese interests. Additionally, Khanal endorsed China’s global initiatives and its vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity.
