China has achieved major breakthroughs in technology over the past five years, with over 700 generative AI large model products completed through official filing procedures, according to the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC). These developments highlight the nation’s progress in artificial intelligence, integrated circuits, and core software systems.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025), the number of devices running HarmonyOS, China’s open-source operating system, surpassed 1.19 billion units. The technology is increasingly moving toward industrial applications, reflecting China’s growing integration of AI into practical sectors. Internet penetration also rose from 70.4% to 79.7%, and the gap between urban and rural areas narrowed by 8.2 percentage points.
China’s IT adoption has strengthened agriculture, e-commerce, and healthcare. The rate of information technology use in agriculture increased from 22.5% to over 30%, while rural online retail sales exceeded 2.5 trillion yuan ($355 billion), a 43% increase from the previous plan period. Telemedicine networks now cover all cities and counties, enhancing access to healthcare nationwide.
