President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international peace and effective multilateralism. They made the remarks in separate messages marking the International Day of Peace on September 21.
Both leaders stressed the importance of a strong and inclusive international system. They also emphasized the central role of the United Nations in maintaining global peace and security.
Pakistan Supports Peaceful Dispute Resolution
Pakistan supports the peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. The leadership also called for collective action to prevent and resolve conflicts.
Moreover, President Zardari highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts regarding the conflict between Iran and the United States. He said these efforts have received international acknowledgment.
Zardari Highlights Self-Determination
President Zardari said lasting peace requires respect for peoples’ right to self-determination. He also stressed the importance of implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions.
He specifically referred to the situations in Jammu and Kashmir and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. These issues remain among Pakistan’s stated foreign policy concerns.
Shehbaz Calls for a Culture of Peace
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s role in promoting regional and international peace.
He urged citizens to reject hatred, intolerance, and discrimination. Instead, he called for empathy, dialogue, and respect for others.
Furthermore, he said building a culture of peace requires contributions from government institutions, civil society, religious leaders, teachers, media organizations, communities, and families.
Focus on Multilateral Cooperation
The messages come as Pakistan prepares for the high-level week of the 81st UN General Assembly. Pakistan has said it will emphasize dialogue, diplomacy, peaceful dispute resolution, sustainable development, and international cooperation during the UNGA session.
The statements also reinforce Pakistan’s continued emphasis on multilateral institutions and the UN Charter as mechanisms for addressing international challenges.
