Researchers from China and Pakistan are strengthening cooperation on climate-resilient agriculture. Their work focuses on soil degradation, environmental pollution, and sustainable farming.

The partnership brings together researchers from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS).

Researchers Expand Joint Scientific Cooperation

Muhammad Zia-ur-Rehman, a professor at the Institute of Soil and Environmental Sciences at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, recently visited the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture (IEDA) under CAAS.

He visited the institute as a foreign expert. The trip continued his research partnership with Professor Li Hongna and her team.

The researchers have worked together since 2019. Their cooperation includes scientific exchanges, joint research, and funding applications.

Joint Research Projects Move Forward

The latest visit came as several joint research initiatives advanced. A project submitted by the researchers in China reached the next review stage.

As a result, Zia-ur-Rehman participated in the proposal defense in person. Meanwhile, joint proposals submitted in Pakistan remain under review by the Pakistan Science Foundation and Punjab Agriculture Research Board.

Combining China and Pakistan’s Expertise

Zia-ur-Rehman highlighted the complementary strengths of both countries. China has strong agricultural research infrastructure and advanced technologies.

Pakistan, meanwhile, offers diverse agro-ecological conditions and opportunities for field-based research.

Therefore, closer collaboration can combine Chinese technological expertise with Pakistan’s field experience and local knowledge.

Focus on Soil Health and Food Security

Climate change is creating additional pressure on agricultural production and food security. The researchers are exploring ways to address these challenges through joint research.

Their work includes soil health and the safe management of municipal and agricultural waste. These areas can help reduce environmental risks and improve soil fertility.

In turn, healthier soils can support higher crop productivity and strengthen food security.

Research on Emerging Agricultural Risks

The partnership is also expanding into emerging environmental challenges. Future research could examine microplastics and antibiotic resistance in agricultural ecosystems.

Researchers also plan to study how these pollutants behave in the environment. Furthermore, they will explore possible approaches to their remediation.

Building Young Research Talent

The collaboration has already produced a joint publication. It has also established a shared research direction on managing municipal waste and crop residues in agricultural soils.

Looking ahead, both sides aim to expand graduate student exchanges and joint supervision. They also plan to increase co-authored research and exchanges between young scientists.

Toward a Joint Research Platform

Zia-ur-Rehman said stronger cooperation could create a pipeline of trained young scientists in both countries.

Moreover, he expressed hope for mutual funding mechanisms to support larger research projects. The researchers also see potential for a joint laboratory or research platform focused on soil health and sustainable waste management.

Strengthening China-Pakistan Agricultural Cooperation

The latest exchange shows that China-Pakistan agricultural cooperation is moving beyond academic visits. Both sides are building longer-term partnerships in research, talent development, and sustainable agriculture.

As climate and environmental challenges grow, such cooperation could help develop practical solutions for farmers and strengthen food security in both countries.
