China Opens Market for Pakistani Maize

China has officially opened its market to Pakistani maize, creating new export opportunities for farmers and agricultural businesses in Pakistan.

China’s customs administration issued quarantine regulations on July 7, allowing the import of maize grown in Pakistan. The decision marks another step forward in agricultural cooperation between Pakistan and China.

Major Export Opportunity for Pakistan

China imported around 26 million tonnes of maize in 2023, valued at approximately $9 billion, mainly to supply its livestock and animal feed industry.

Moreover, the new market offers Pakistan an opportunity to diversify maize exports beyond existing destinations such as Vietnam. Increased access to the Chinese market could also strengthen the country’s agricultural export earnings.

Export Requirements Before Shipments Begin

Pakistani exporters must complete several regulatory requirements before shipments can start.

They need to register farms, processing facilities, and storage units with Chinese customs authorities. In addition, exporters must comply with strict pest-control measures, fumigation standards, and certification procedures.

These requirements aim to ensure food safety and maintain quarantine standards.

Boost for Pakistan-China Agricultural Trade

The approval builds on recent progress in agricultural market access between Pakistan and China.

Previously, China expanded market access for several Pakistani products, including dried fruits, nuts, and medicinal plants. As a result, the latest decision further strengthens bilateral agricultural cooperation.

Supporting Farmers and Export Growth

Maize is Pakistan’s third-largest cereal crop after wheat and rice. Access to one of the world’s largest maize import markets could increase demand for Pakistani produce and improve export potential.

Furthermore, stronger agricultural trade may encourage investment in modern farming, processing, and storage facilities.

Looking Ahead

The opening of the Chinese market represents a significant opportunity for Pakistan’s agriculture sector. Once exporters complete the required approvals, maize shipments could become an important part of bilateral trade.

Consequently, the move is expected to deepen Pakistan-China agricultural cooperation while creating new opportunities for farmers and exporters.
