Chinese company Hangeng has exported donkey meat and hides worth $195,425 from the Gwadar Free Zone to China.
The company completed two consignments after meeting inspection requirements, certifications, and regulatory standards set by Pakistan and China.
Two Shipments Sent to China
The first consignment left Pakistan on July 5. It carried donkey meat and hides worth $66,060 with a net weight of 27.5 metric tons.
The second shipment departed on July 9. It was valued at $129,356 and weighed 67.07 metric tons.
Both consignments contained frozen donkey meat and were transported to China by sea.
Gwadar Facility Supports New Export Opportunity
A Hangeng official said the exports became possible after Pakistan lifted restrictions on donkey hide exports to China.
Moreover, the company operates under strict controls at its Gwadar Free Zone facility. The system ensures that products leave the facility only through air or sea routes and prevents by-products from entering the domestic market.
Modern Slaughterhouse Established in Gwadar
Pakistan’s first China-led modern donkey meat and hide processing facility was completed in Gwadar Free Zone last year.
The project involved an investment of $50 million. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh launched the groundbreaking ceremony on May 4, 2024, during the unveiling of the Agriculture Industrial Park.
China’s Demand for Donkey Products
China has a significant market for donkey meat and hides. Donkey hides are especially valued as a key raw material for Ejiao, a traditional medicine ingredient.
Pakistan, which has one of the world’s largest donkey populations, is home to approximately 5.8 million donkeys.
