Air and maritime security
Representatives from the Chinese and U.S. militaries convened in Hawaii from May 28 to 29 for a working group meeting of the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA). According to a statement released by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the discussions were guided by a shared consensus to build a constructive, strategically stable relationship based on mutual respect. The two delegations engaged in candid dialogue regarding current air and maritime safety, while evaluating the implementation of the Rules of Behavior for Safety of Air and Maritime Encounters established in 2025.
Enhancing Operational Communication
Both sides emphasized that maintaining consistent and effective communication between their respective militaries is vital for ground and naval forces. They agreed that these exchanges encourage frontline troops to operate with greater professionalism, deepen mutual understanding, and significantly reduce the risk of dangerous misperceptions or operational miscalculations in shared spaces.
China Outlines Sovereignty and Regional Security Stance
During the meetings, the PLA firmly reiterated its opposition to any maneuvers that compromise China’s sovereignty and security under the guise of freedom of navigation and overflight. The Chinese delegation explicitly countered any perceived infringements, provocations, close-in reconnaissance, or harassment. Moving forward, the statement concluded, China remains dedicated to defending its national territorial sovereignty and maritime interests while working to preserve regional peace and economic prosperity.
