Pakistan joined the launch of the sovereign AI white paper at the Zhongguancun Forum in Beijing on March 28, 2026, alongside China, Brazil, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and Kazakhstan.
The white paper defines sovereign AI as national control over AI systems, data, and infrastructure, while promoting international cooperation on technology, deployment, and governance.Khan Muhammad Wazir, tech affairs counselor at the Pakistani Embassy, represented Pakistan at the ceremony and highlighted the importance of sovereign AI for national security, technological independence, and adapting AI tools to local needs.
Officials emphasized that Pakistan-China cooperation in science, technology, agriculture, and education is expanding, with both government and private sector engagement strengthening joint development and knowledge sharing in AI.Sovereign AI is increasingly important for countries to manage public services, sensitive data, and critical infrastructure, ensuring local adaptability while reducing dependence on foreign technologies.
