University of the Punjab has partnered with Pesticon Seeds (Pvt) Ltd to commercialize a Pak-China developed hybrid rice variety aimed at improving Pakistan’s rice production and export potential.
The hybrid rice produces around 140 maunds per acre, almost three times the yield of conventional rice varieties. Under the agreement, Pesticon Seeds will manage the import, marketing, and sales of the hybrid seed in Pakistan as well as regulatory approvals and certification. In return, the university will receive royalties based on seed sales.
The variety, named PU-786, was developed after nearly a decade of research and testing in different regions across Pakistan’s four provinces. Researchers say it shows strong resistance to bacterial diseases, heat, and pests. The seed has also been approved by the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council after technical evaluations.
