National Highway Authority has approved a new 172-kilometer motorway aimed at improving regional connectivity and easing pressure on the Karakoram Highway.
Strategic Route Through Northern Pakistan
The project will pass through Mansehra, Kaghan, Naran, Jhal Khand, and Chilas. Meanwhile, it is expected to provide an alternative to the existing Karakoram Highway route.
Two-Phase Construction Plan
According to officials, the motorway will be developed in two phases. Initially, the first phase will connect Mansehra to Kaghan and Naran up to Babusar Top. Subsequently, the second phase will extend the route from Babusar Top to Chilas.
Babusar Tunnel as Key Feature
Moreover, the project includes a 13.5-kilometer Babusar Tunnel, which is expected to become the longest tunnel in Pakistan. In addition, the motorway will be constructed as a four-lane highway with future expansion to six lanes.
Improved Travel and Logistics Efficiency
Furthermore, the route is designed to reduce travel distance by up to 120 kilometers compared to the Karakoram Highway. As a result, it is expected to enhance both passenger travel and freight movement efficiency.
Link to China–Pakistan Connectivity
In addition, officials highlighted that the motorway will strengthen connectivity between Pakistan and China by improving access between southern ports and northern trade corridors.
Boost to Tourism and Trade Routes
Finally, the project is expected to support tourism in northern regions while also improving long-term trade logistics across mountainous routes.
