Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, citing Foreign Minister Wang Yi, said that the current fighting in the Middle East is a war that should never have occurred and does no one any good. He highlighted China’s ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions through dialogue and diplomatic mediation. Over the past two days, FM Wang Yi held phone conversations with foreign ministers from Kuwait and Bahrain and Pakistan and Qatar to discuss ways to restore peace.
Guo noted that the US and Israel launched a military attack on Iran without UN authorization while Iran-US negotiations were still underway, which violates international law. China condemns attacks on civilians and non-military targets and urges an immediate halt to hostilities. He stressed that a lasting solution depends on returning to dialogue and negotiation and adhering to international law and the basic norms of international relations.
The spokesperson added that China’s Special Envoy on the Middle East is actively conducting shuttle visits in the region. As a permanent UN Security Council member and a friend of Middle Eastern countries, China will continue striving for peace and justice and strengthen communication with all relevant parties to help de-escalate tensions and stabilize the situation.
