The federal government has approved a comprehensive battery-backed power solution to provide uninterrupted electricity to Gwadar by early 2027. Power Minister Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari said the system will guarantee “100 percent reliable electricity” to key installations, including the deep-sea port, desalination plants, and industrial zones.
The new framework will use Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) along with low-cost backup generation to maintain a stable supply, especially during disruptions from external sources. Currently, Gwadar receives electricity from imports via Iran and Pakistan’s national grid, both of which face technical and seasonal challenges.
Officials noted that the project will replace earlier proposals, including a large coal-fired plant under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which was deemed excessive for local demand. The battery-based solution is expected to support sustainable development and strengthen investor confidence in the port city.
