Pakistan and the Philippines agreed to strengthen multi-sector cooperation and enhance trade relations during the second Joint Economic Commission meeting in Manila. The session was co-chaired by Pakistan’s Secretary Economic Affairs Division, Muhammad Humair Karim Kidwai, and Philippines’ Undersecretary for International Trade, Atty. Allan B. Gepty, focusing on practical initiatives for economic engagement.
Senior officials, including Pakistan’s Ambassador Dr. Asima Rabbani and Philippine Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, attended the discussions. Both sides exchanged views on the global economic environment and reviewed bilateral trade, highlighting untapped potential in agriculture, halal-certified products, energy, tourism, banking, and education. Private sector engagement and business collaborations were emphasized, including reactivating the Pakistan-Philippines Joint Business Council and forming a Joint Working Group on Investment.
Discussions also covered market access, investment facilitation, and possible Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) exploration. Efficient visa processes were stressed to support trade and business travel. Sectoral cooperation was agreed upon in agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals, energy, minerals, tourism, banking, taxation, and higher education, paving the way for stronger bilateral economic ties and sustainable growth.
