Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed major reforms at Pakistan’s ports to reduce cargo delays and unnecessary testing, noting that inefficiencies are harming trade and economic growth.
He ordered reductions in port charges, improved rail connectivity from ports, and faster dredging and expansion projects, especially in Karachi, to allow larger vessels.
The PM also proposed a transparent auction system and dedicated yards for abandoned cargo, with a new e-bidding platform for nationwide participation.
Officials confirmed progress on the national ports master plan and highlighted that bulk cargo handling charges at Port Qasim have been reduced by over 50%, aiming to boost the efficiency and global competitiveness of Pakistani exports.
