Pakistan Petroleum Ltd. (PPL) has started constructing an artificial island off the coast of Sindh, around 30 kilometers from Sujawal, to accelerate offshore oil and gas exploration. The six-foot-high platform is designed to withstand high tides and allow continuous drilling operations, aiming to boost the country’s energy production capacity.
The island will serve as a central launchpad for drilling approximately 25 wells, with construction expected to finish by February. PPL’s approach draws inspiration from Abu Dhabi’s artificial islands, marking a pioneering step in Pakistan’s energy sector. This development comes after the government granted new offshore exploration licenses, signaling a strong focus on tapping massive oil reserves in the region.
Officials say the project will significantly enhance Pakistan’s oil and gas exploration capabilities, attract investment, and support long-term energy security. The move also reflects the country’s commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure, employing innovative technologies, and creating a robust foundation for sustained growth in offshore hydrocarbon resources.
