China has pledged to support Syria in achieving peace and stability, reaffirming its commitment to the Middle Eastern nation’s sovereignty and reconstruction. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during a meeting with Syria’s interim foreign minister, Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, the first senior Syrian official visit since the interim government formed in March.
Wang highlighted the long-standing friendship between China and Syria, emphasizing respect for Syria’s political choices and reiterating support for the one-China principle. China welcomed Syria’s cooperation in preventing the use of its territory for activities against Chinese interests and its opposition to international terrorism, including groups like the East Turkestan Islamic Movement.
Both sides agreed to gradually resume exchanges at multiple levels, enhance economic and social cooperation, and explore Syria’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative. China expressed willingness to assist in Syria’s economic reconstruction and support initiatives aimed at improving people’s livelihoods while promoting a Syrian-led political transition process to achieve lasting peace.
