Historic Pakistan-Malaysia Engagement
During Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s three-day official visit to Malaysia, Pakistan and Malaysia reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across trade, education, defence, technology, and governance. The visit included extensive discussions with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, aimed at boosting strategic and economic ties between the two nations.
Trade and Halal Meat Agreement
A major highlight of the visit was Malaysia’s announcement to import $200 million worth of halal meat from Pakistan. PM Shehbaz described the move as a “welcome step” that will further strengthen engagement in the sector. He assured that exports would comply with Malaysian halal certification standards and market regulations. Both leaders emphasised joint ventures and expertise-sharing to expand trade and investment opportunities.
Strengthening Economic and Industrial Ties
Beyond halal meat, discussions covered palm oil imports, investment facilitation, and implementation of the Malaysia–Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA). Both nations agreed to maintain sustainable supply chains while promoting environmentally responsible practices.
Education, Technology, and Vocational Cooperation
The visit saw six MoUs signed to promote educational and vocational collaboration, including Halal certification, tourism, and combating corruption. Both leaders highlighted opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), with Pakistan keen to leverage Malaysia’s experience in technological innovation and human resource development.
Defence, Cybersecurity, and Aviation Cooperation
Pakistan and Malaysia also reiterated their commitment to defence cooperation under the Joint Committee on Defence Cooperation (JCDC). Knowledge and technology transfer in defence science and industry, cybersecurity collaboration, counter-terrorism, and aviation expansion were discussed to boost connectivity, business, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
Regional and Global Issues
Both PMs discussed regional stability, emphasising peace between Pakistan and India and cooperation to counter terrorism. They strongly condemned the ongoing genocide in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire, protection of civilians, and unhindered humanitarian aid. Both sides reaffirmed support for Palestinian statehood based on pre-1967 borders.
Warm Diplomatic Reception
PM Shehbaz was received with a guard of honour at Malaysia’s Perdana Putra Complex, where national anthems were played, and delegations were formally introduced. He expressed admiration for PM Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership, describing Malaysia as a “second home” for Pakistanis and praising the opportunities available for Pakistani professionals and students in Malaysia.
Looking Ahead
The leaders agreed to continue collaborating across all sectors of mutual interest, with PM Shehbaz noting that enhanced economic, educational, and technological cooperation will benefit both countries. The visit reflects the enduring friendship, strategic partnership, and shared vision of Pakistan and Malaysia for regional stability, economic growth, and people-to-people connectivity.
