In a recent partnership involving SK Hydro (Pvt) Ltd., the Kaghan region’s Forest Division, and key construction collaborators, a tree plantation drive was conducted at the SK Hydropower Station project site. The initiative, themed “Greening the Kunhar River Banks with a Green Power Station,” reflects SK Project Company’s enduring commitment to environmental conservation. It also serves as a practical demonstration of the high-quality China-Pakistan collaboration for sustainable development under the Belt and Road Initiative, according to a press release issued on Friday.
Since its inception, more than 3,000 saplings have been planted in the vicinity of the hydropower station. This effort aligns with SK Project Company’s ongoing support for Pakistan’s “Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Programme” (TBTTP), which commenced in 2019. Overall, the company has planted over 150,000 trees in the region, helping combat soil erosion and enhance environmental conditions. The initiative further emphasizes the successful partnership between China and Pakistan in promoting green development within the broader framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
SK Hydro’s contributions extend beyond afforestation. The hydropower station, often referred to as the “green pearl” of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), commenced operations in September 2024. With an annual power generation capacity of 3.212 billion kWh, the station is expected to save 1.28 million tons of standard coal, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3.2 million tons, and supply electricity to over a million households.
Reaffirming its commitment to local progress, the Project Company has initiated several community-focused projects, including the construction of the N15 highway, assistance in developing a trout hatchery, emergency disaster repairs, and educational support for students. These initiatives aim to ensure that local communities benefit directly from developmental projects while reinforcing the strong and historic friendship between China and Pakistan.
