Zardari Highlights CPEC’s Role in Gilgit-Baltistan
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has opened new doors of opportunity for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). The project, he added, is helping create jobs, enhance connectivity, and strengthen trade across the region.

CPEC: Gateway of Growth and Connectivity

Speaking at the 78th anniversary of GB’s freedom from Dogra rule, the president described CPEC as Pakistan’s northern gateway and a symbol of lasting friendship with China. He stressed that the benefits of these projects must reach every valley and village, ensuring shared prosperity and inclusive development.

Zardari also urged local authorities to make GB a model of justice, equality, and progress — one that can inspire other regions of Pakistan.

Tribute to GB’s People and Martyrs

President Zardari praised the courage and sacrifices of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, calling the region “the crown of the nation.” For over seven decades, he noted, the people of GB have stood shoulder to shoulder with the rest of Pakistan, guarding borders and advancing national development.

He paid tribute to the heroes of the 1947 liberation movement, whose struggle and sacrifices, he said, paved the way for GB’s freedom and its integration into Pakistan.

Tourism, Energy, and Local Airline Proposal

Highlighting GB’s natural potential, the president said that its vast hydropower resources and scenic beauty could become major drivers of economic growth. He suggested exploring the creation of a local airline to promote tourism, noting that affordable regional aircraft could effectively connect the area’s remote valleys.

Moreover, he said that developing sustainable tourism and renewable energy would not only boost livelihoods but also strengthen Pakistan’s green economy.

PPP’s Commitment to Regional Progress

Reaffirming the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) dedication to GB’s development, Zardari recalled how Zulfikar Ali Bhutto abolished the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) in 1974, while Benazir Bhutto introduced key governance reforms.

He emphasised that the PPP’s ongoing priorities include improving education, healthcare, and infrastructure in every part of GB. These, he said, are essential pillars for building a more prosperous and equitable society.

Solidarity with Kashmir

President Zardari also expressed solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). He reminded the audience that while GB enjoys freedom under the Pakistani flag, Kashmiris continue to fight for their right to self-determination under United Nations resolutions.

Ceremony and Participation

The event was attended by GB Governor Syed Mehdi Shah, Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan, senior military and civil officials, and a large number of citizens. The celebrations featured a parade, colourful cultural floats, and tributes to the martyrs of the GB independence movement.
