Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of openness and cooperation between China and the European Union during the 25th China-EU Summit held in Beijing. In his meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Xi stressed that both sides should “properly manage differences” and avoid protectionist tendencies.
He cautioned against attempts to reduce interdependence, stating that interdependency is not a risk, and convergent interests are not a threat. Xi added that competitiveness must not come from “building walls or barriers,” warning that “decoupling and severing supply chains will only result in self-isolation.”
The Chinese president urged that efforts to “reduce dependency” must not translate into a decline in China-EU cooperation. He described the bilateral trade relationship as complementary and mutually beneficial, noting that both sides can reach a “dynamic equilibrium through development.”
Highlighting China’s ongoing high-quality development and openness, Xi said it will unlock fresh opportunities for collaboration, particularly in green and digital partnerships, investment, and innovation.
He also called on the EU to remain open to Chinese trade and investment, avoid restrictive trade tools, and ensure a fair business environment for Chinese companies operating in Europe.
