China has voiced deep concern over the recent escalation along the Thailand-Cambodia border and urged both nations to resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue and consultation.
Speaking at a regular press briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasised that both Thailand and Cambodia are friendly neighbours of China and important members of ASEAN. He reiterated that maintaining good-neighbourly ties and managing disputes responsibly is in the “fundamental and long-term interests” of both sides.
“We are deeply concerned about the current developments and hope that the two sides will resolve their issues properly through dialogue and consultation,” Guo said.
The border tensions flared up Thursday as troops from both countries exchanged fire near a disputed area, home to centuries-old temples. According to international media reports, the clash has already resulted in the deaths of nine Thai civilians across three provinces. Both countries have accused each other of initiating the conflict.
Guo noted that China has consistently maintained a fair and impartial stance and intends to continue promoting regional peace.
Emphasising regional peace, Guo Jiakun stated that China, guided by the shared aspirations of neighbouring nations, remains committed to promoting dialogue and de-escalation through constructive engagement.
China’s call for calm comes at a time when ASEAN unity and stability face renewed challenges due to territorial disputes and geopolitical pressures.
