Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever held a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Brussels on Tuesday.
During the discussion, De Wever highlighted the longstanding and active relations between Belgium and China, noting that Belgium serves as a key gateway for China-EU cooperation. He also shared his admiration for China’s development, based on his multiple visits to the country.
Acknowledging the differences in perspective between Europe and China, De Wever emphasized the importance of enhancing dialogue and building mutual trust amid current global geopolitical complexities. He reaffirmed Belgium’s commitment to multilateralism and European strategic autonomy, while expressing optimism for constructive outcomes from the upcoming China-EU leaders’ summit.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, recognized Belgium’s influential role as a founding EU member and host of EU institutions, calling it a vital player in European integration and China-EU relations.
He praised the pragmatic and balanced approach of Belgium’s new government toward China and reaffirmed China’s commitment to advancing its comprehensive and friendly partnership with Belgium.
Wang stated that China remains committed to high-quality development and deeper opening up. He welcomed Belgian businesses to expand in China and urged Belgium to ensure a fair and secure environment for Chinese investments in return.
He also noted the importance of this year marking the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations, calling it a meaningful milestone for strengthening future cooperation.
